Land is a natural resource of utmost importance. It supports natural vegetation, wildlife, human life, economic activities, transport and communication systems. It is finite, so it must be used with careful planning.

Soil develops gradually through the interaction of parent material, relief, climate, organisms and time.

Soil is the most important natural resource. It is the medium of plant growth and supports different types of living organisms. Soil takes millions of years to form a few centimetres in depth.

12Major Soil Types of India — Quick Visual Map

Alluvial Soil

Most widely spread; northern plains; also deltas of Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri. Rich and suited to paddy, wheat, sugarcane and cereals/pulses.

Old = Bangar · New = Khadar

Black Soil

Regur; Deccan trap/Basalt region. Clayey, high moisture-holding capacity, rich in calcium carbonate, magnesium, potash and lime; ideal for cotton.

Deep cracks in hot weather → better aeration.

Red & Yellow Soil

Develops on crystalline igneous rocks in low-rainfall eastern and southern Deccan areas. Red colour is associated with iron diffusion; hydrated form appears yellow.

Laterite Soil

Develops under tropical/subtropical climate with alternate wet and dry seasons. Intense leaching due to heavy rain; generally acidic and nutrient deficient.

With conservation: tea, coffee; red laterite in parts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala suits cashew.

Arid Soil

Red to brown, sandy and saline; low humus and moisture. Kankar layers restrict infiltration. With proper irrigation, cultivable areas occur in western Rajasthan.

Forest Soil

Hilly/mountainous areas. Texture varies with environment; loamy/silty on valley sides and coarse on upper slopes. Lower valleys and terraces can be fertile.

2. About 30 words

(i) Name three states having black soil and the crop mainly grown in it.

Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh have extensive black soil. It is especially suitable for cotton, hence it is also called black cotton soil.

(ii) Soil in river deltas of eastern coast?

Alluvial soil. It is fertile, contains proportions of sand, silt and clay, and commonly contains potash, phosphoric acid and lime. It supports crops such as paddy, wheat and sugarcane.

(iii) Steps to control soil erosion in hilly areas?

Contour ploughing, terrace cultivation and appropriate vegetation cover can reduce the speed of runoff and restrict erosion. Terrace farming is especially useful on slopes.

(i) Explain land-use pattern in India and why forest land has not increased much since 1960–61.

Land is used for forests, land not available for cultivation, other uncultivated land, fallow land and net sown area. Its use is influenced by topography, climate and soil as well as population density, technological capability, culture and traditions. Forest area remains below the desired 33 per cent benchmark mentioned in the source. Increasing pressure from agriculture, settlements, infrastructure and economic activities, together with land degradation and other competing uses, limits expansion of forest cover. The source also notes that land-use reporting is incomplete for some areas, so the available figures do not cover the entire geographical area.

(ii) How have technical and economic development led to more consumption of resources?

Technological development increases the ability to extract, process and use resources, while economic development expands production, infrastructure, transport, industry and consumption. As technology and institutions improve, resources that were previously difficult to access may become usable. Economic growth therefore increases demand for land, minerals, energy, water and other resources.
