Project Tiger — Why Was It Needed?

Sacred Groves

Sacred groves are protected forest patches preserved through traditional beliefs and restrictions on interference.

The chapter describes sacred groves as virgin forests preserved in pristine form because nature is revered and interference is banned.

EXAMPLES: Mundas and Santhals worship mahua and kadamba; some communities in Odisha and Bihar worship tamarind and mango during weddings; peepal and banyan are widely considered sacred.
