Primitive subsistence farming is practised on small patches with primitive tools and depends on monsoon, natural soil fertility and environmental suitability.

  • When fertility declines, farmers shift to a fresh patch.
  • Land productivity is low because modern inputs such as fertilisers are not used.

03 · Intensive Subsistence

Maximum Output from Limited Land

Practised in areas of high population pressure on land. It is labour-intensive and uses high doses of biochemical inputs and irrigation for higher production.

WHY THE PRESSURE? The chapter links successive inheritance to division of land holdings, making holdings uneconomical while farmers continue seeking maximum output from limited land because alternative livelihoods are limited.

Plantation farming is a type of commercial farming and has an interface of agriculture and industry.
REGIONAL EXAMPLE: Rice is commercial in Haryana and Punjab but subsistence in Odisha, showing that commercialisation varies by region.

07 · Wheat

Major Rabi Cereal

Wheat requires a cool growing season, bright sunshine during ripening and 50–75 cm annual rainfall evenly distributed over the growing season.

TWO IMPORTANT WHEAT ZONES: Ganga-Satluj plains in the north-west and black-soil region of the Deccan.
MAJOR STATES: Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan.
08 · Millets & Maize

Jowar • Bajra • Ragi • Maize

Jowar

Rain-fed; moist areas; hardly needs irrigation. Major states: Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh.

Bajra

Grows well on sandy and shallow black soils. Major states: Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Haryana.

Ragi

Dry-region crop; grows on red, black, sandy, loamy and shallow black soils. Karnataka is a major producer.

Maize

Kharif; 21–27°C; old alluvial soil; used as food and fodder. Major states include Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

NUTRITION: The chapter highlights millets as coarse grains with high nutritional value; ragi is rich in iron, calcium, micronutrients and roughage.
09 · Pulses

Protein + Soil Fertility

India is described as the largest producer and consumer of pulses. Major pulses include tur (arhar), urad, moong, masur, peas and gram.

  • Pulses need less moisture and can survive dry conditions.
  • They are mostly grown in rotation with other crops.
  • All except arhar help restore soil fertility by fixing nitrogen from the air, according to the supplied chapter.
  • Major producing states: Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka.
EXAM TRICK: Pulses = protein + low moisture requirement + crop rotation + nitrogen fixation (except arhar as stated in the chapter).
10 · Sugarcane

Food-Industry Link

Sugarcane is tropical as well as subtropical. It grows well in hot and humid climate, at 21–27°C, with annual rainfall between 75 and 100 cm; irrigation is needed in low-rainfall regions.

USES: Main source of sugar, gur (jaggary), khandsari and molasses.
MAJOR STATES: Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar, Punjab and Haryana.
11 · Oilseeds

Groundnut • Mustard • Soyabean and More

Main oilseeds include groundnut, mustard, coconut, sesamum, soyabean, castor seed, cotton seed, linseed and sunflower. Most are edible and used as cooking mediums; some are raw materials for soap, cosmetics and ointments.

12 · Tea

Plantation + Labour-Intensive Beverage Crop

Tea is a plantation crop. It grows well in tropical and sub-tropical climates with deep, fertile, well-drained soil rich in humus and organic matter. Bushes need warm, moist, frost-free climate and frequent showers evenly distributed through the year.

Labour

Tea is labour-intensive and requires abundant, cheap and skilled labour.

Processing

Tea is processed within the tea garden to restore freshness.

Major regions

Assam; Darjeeling & Jalpaiguri in West Bengal; Tamil Nadu; Kerala, plus other producing states.

2020: The chapter states India was the second-largest tea producer after China.
13 · Coffee

Arabica & Southern Hills

Indian coffee is noted in the chapter for good quality. Arabica, initially brought from Yemen, is produced in India. Cultivation was introduced on Baba Budan Hills and is concentrated in Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

14 · Horticulture

Fruits & Vegetables

In 2020, India was described as the second-largest producer of fruits and vegetables after China. The chapter lists tropical and temperate fruits and several regional examples.

Rubber • Cotton • Jute

Rubber

Equatorial crop; under special conditions tropical/subtropical. Needs moist humid climate, rainfall above 200 cm and temperature above 25°C. Mainly Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andaman & Nicobar and Garo Hills of Meghalaya.

Cotton

Kharif; grows in drier parts of black cotton soil of Deccan Plateau; high temperature, light rainfall/irrigation, 210 frost-free days and bright sunshine; 6–8 months to mature.

Jute

“Golden fibre”; grows on well-drained fertile soils in flood plains renewed annually. Major states: West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Odisha, Meghalaya. Used for bags, mats, ropes, yarn, carpets and artefacts.

FIBRE CROPS: Cotton, jute, hemp and natural silk. Silk fibre is obtained from silkworm cocoons; rearing silkworms is sericulture.
17 · Bhoodan–Gramdan

Vinoba Bhave & the Blood-less Revolution

At Pochampally in Telangana, when landless villagers requested land, Shri Ram Chandra Reddy offered 80 acres to be distributed among 80 landless villagers. This act was known as Bhoodan. Later, some owners offered villages for distribution among landless people, known as Gramdan.

KEY IDEA: The Bhoodan–Gramdan movement initiated by Vinoba Bhave is also called the Blood-less Revolution in the chapter.
