1. Industrialisation ≠ Factories Alone

Industrialisation means a broad transformation in production: new markets, new organisation of labour, technology, investment, factories and changes in traditional production.

Common misconception

“Industrialisation started when factories appeared.”

NCERT idea

Large-scale production for international markets existed before factories. This earlier phase is called proto-industrialisation.

Exam line: Industrialisation was a gradual process; factory production grew alongside older forms of hand and household production.

Richard Arkwright's cotton mill brought costly machines and several processes under one roof, making supervision and labour regulation easier.

Important: Factories became highly visible, but they did not immediately replace workshops and domestic production.

5. Why Cotton Became the Leading Industry

First phase

Cotton was the leading industrial sector up to the 1840s.

Machines

Spinning and weaving technologies increased output and strengthened yarn production.

Markets

British manufacturers supplied growing domestic and overseas markets.

Next phase

After the 1840s, iron and steel grew rapidly, especially with railway expansion.

6. Industrialisation Was Slower and More Uneven Than It Looks

Factories looked revolutionary, but the entire economy did not become mechanised at once.

  • Even at the end of the nineteenth century, less than 20% of the workforce was in technologically advanced industrial sectors.
  • Much textile output continued in domestic units.
  • Small innovations improved food processing, pottery, glass, tanning, furniture and other industries.
  • Technology was expensive, sometimes unreliable, and often adopted cautiously.
  • Even Watt's improved steam engine spread slowly.
Core understanding: Industrialisation was a mixed economy of factories, workshops, household production and hand skills.

7. Why Did Some Industrialists Prefer Hand Labour?

Hand labour preferred when…

  • Demand was seasonal or uncertain.
  • Products needed variety or fine finishing.
  • Machines were expensive.
  • Labour was easily available and cheap.

Machines preferred when…

  • Production was standardised.
  • Large quantities were needed.
  • Labour was scarce or expensive.
  • Mechanical power reduced labour needs.
Key example: Victorian elites often preferred handmade goods because they symbolised refinement and class.

9. Life of Industrial Workers

Migration

Workers travelled from villages to cities seeking jobs.

Job insecurity

Getting a job often depended on friends, relatives and hiring networks.

Seasonal work

Some industries offered work only during busy periods.

Real wages

Nominal wages could rise while high prices reduced purchasing power.

Unemployment

Economic slumps could produce extremely high unemployment in some regions.

Technology fear

Workers often resisted machines when they believed machines threatened employment.

10. Indian Textiles Before British Industrialisation

Before colonial dominance, Indian textiles were deeply connected to international trade through Indian merchants, bankers, supply merchants and ports.
Remember the ports: Surat → Gulf/Red Sea; Masulipatam → Southeast Asia; Hoogly → Southeast Asian trade.

11. Decline of Old Ports and Rise of Colonial Ports

From the 1750s, European companies gained concessions and monopoly rights. This weakened the old merchant-controlled network.

12. East India Company and the Gomasthas

Gomasthas were Company agents appointed to supervise weavers and secure regular supplies, replacing much of the earlier merchant network.
Why resistance? Weavers lost bargaining power, faced advances tied to contracts, and were often prevented from selling to other buyers.

Indian piece-goods were 33% of exports in 1811–12 but only 3% by 1850–51. British cotton goods simultaneously became a major part of Indian imports.

14. Why Did Handloom Survive?

Industrialisation did not destroy every handloom. Handloom producers adapted and specialised.

  • Fly shuttle increased productivity and allowed wider cloth to be woven.
  • Specialised designs were difficult for mills to copy.
  • Fine saris and distinctive regional products retained demand.
  • Demand for fine cloth bought by richer consumers was more stable than demand for coarse cloth.
  • Entire households, including women and children, often participated in production.

European Managing Agencies

Invested in tea, coffee, mining, indigo and jute, mainly for export markets.

18. Industrial Workers in India

Recruitment

Industrial workers often came from villages. Jobbers helped recruit and manage labour.

Jobber

A jobber could recruit workers, maintain discipline and become an important link between workers and management.

Working conditions

Long shifts, low wages, insecurity and unhealthy conditions were common.

Family economy

Workers often maintained village links and moved between rural and urban work.

Key idea: The “industrial worker” was not completely detached from rural society; migration and village ties remained important.

Industrial growth was therefore not simply “British factories versus Indian factories”. It involved colonial agencies, Indian entrepreneurs, handlooms, domestic units, workers and changing markets.

21. Why Did Manchester Labels Use Indian Gods and Kings?

  • Foreign-made goods could seem unfamiliar or distant.
  • Religious images gave the product a sense of familiarity and approval.
  • Historical figures could associate the product with prestige and respect.
  • Indian manufacturers later used similar visual strategies to promote swadeshi.
Important distinction: Advertising was used by both colonial manufacturers and Indian manufacturers, but Indian advertising could also carry a nationalist message.
