Example 2 (Possibility 'Can Be')
Statements: All doctors are humans. Some humans are teachers. Conclusions: I. Some doctors can be teachers. II. Some teachers are doctors.
Analysis: • Doctors are a subset of humans. Humans overlap with teachers. • Since there is no contradiction or negative constraint between doctors and teachers, the possibility holds: Some doctors can be teachers. • However, as a definite certainty, conclusion II does not necessarily follow. Answer: Only conclusion (I) follows.
Example 3 (Negative Proposition)
Statements: No bird is a mammal. All mammals are animals. Conclusions: I. No bird is an animal. II. No mammal is a bird.
Analysis: • Statement: 'No bird is a mammal' is an E-type proposition. • E-type converts directly to: 'No mammal is a bird'. Hence Conclusion II follows. • Conclusion I does not follow because birds could overlap with animals outside mammals. Answer: Only conclusion (II) follows.
