Standard Proposition Classifications:
Four fundamental forms:
A (Universal Affirmative): 'All S are P'
E (Universal Negative): 'No S is P'
I (Particular Affirmative): 'Some S are P'
O (Particular Negative): 'Some S are not P'
Immediate Conversion Laws:
• A-type converts by limitation to: 'Some P are S'
• E-type converts exactly to: 'No P is S'
• I-type converts exactly to: 'Some P are S'
• O-type has no valid standard conversion.
Deductive Rules & Possibility Analysis:
• Two negative or two particular premises yield no valid deduction.
• If one premise is negative, the conclusion must be negative.
• Definite conclusion vs. Possibility ('can be'): If an intersection is not forbidden by any premise, the possibility holds.

Solved Illustrative Examples

Example 1 (Universal & Particular Deduction)
Statements: All pencils are sticks. Some sticks are boxes.
Conclusions: I. Some boxes are pencils. II. All pencils are boxes.
Analysis:
• The set of pencils is entirely inside sticks.
• The set of boxes overlaps with sticks, but is not required to touch pencils.
• Conclusion I ('Some boxes are pencils') is possible but not definitely certain.
• Conclusion II ('All pencils are boxes') is definitely false.
Answer: Neither (I) nor (II) follows.
Example 2 (Possibility 'Can Be')
Statements: All doctors are humans. Some humans are teachers.
Conclusions: I. Some doctors can be teachers. II. Some teachers are doctors.
Analysis:
• Doctors are a subset of humans. Humans overlap with teachers.
• Since there is no contradiction or negative constraint between doctors and teachers, the possibility holds: Some doctors can be teachers.
• However, as a definite certainty, conclusion II does not necessarily follow.
Answer: Only conclusion (I) follows.
Example 3 (Negative Proposition)
Statements: No bird is a mammal. All mammals are animals.
Conclusions: I. No bird is an animal. II. No mammal is a bird.
Analysis:
• Statement: 'No bird is a mammal' is an E-type proposition.
• E-type converts directly to: 'No mammal is a bird'. Hence Conclusion II follows.
• Conclusion I does not follow because birds could overlap with animals outside mammals.
Answer: Only conclusion (II) follows.
