1. Grid Iron Streets, Citadels & Lower Towns
The hallmark of Harappan urbanism is its grid iron planning. Avenues crossed at right angles, dividing the city into rectangular sectors. Most cities had a dual-sector division.

2. Sanitation, Public Drainage & Private Drains
No contemporary civilization, including Egypt and Mesopotamia, matched the sanitation standards of the Indus Valley. Civic management prioritized waste management and clean water supply.
- House Drains: Bathrooms and kitchens had brick-paved floors sloping toward a corner wall inlet, leading water out via terracotta pipe sleeves.
- Covered Sewers: Main street drains were covered with brick slabs or stone blocks. They had regular inspection chambers (manholes) for cleanup.
House drains emptied into brick-lined soak pits (cesspools) where solid debris settled. Only the liquid runoff entered the public street drains. Water supply was secured by private house wells. Mohenjo-daro had over 700 brick-lined public and private wells. Kalibangan is unique for its use of wooden drainage conduits instead of baked bricks.
3. Brick Technology, Metrology & Civic Architecture
Standardisation proves a highly organized administrative authority, visible in brick dimensions, trade weight systems, and massive monuments.
