1. Grid Plan, Brick Standards & City Layouts

2. Sanitary Engineering: Drainage, Wells and Bathrooms
The hygiene and sanitation systems of the Harappans were far superior to those of contemporary Egypt and Mesopotamia.
- Covered Channels: Street drains were built of brick laid in gypsum-lime mortar and covered with loose slabs or stone panels for easy cleaning.
- Soakage Sump Pits: Sump pits were built at regular intervals where solid waste settled, allowing only liquid effluent to flow away.
- Tapered Pipes: Fired clay drainpipes were built inside house walls to channel waste from upper floors to street drains.
- Public & Private Wells: Mohenjo-daro alone had over 700 circular brick-lined wells. Almost every house had a private well.
- Paved Bathrooms: House bathrooms had floors paved with carefully polished, waterproof fired bricks sloping towards a drain corner.

3. Domestic Architecture & Civil Engineering
Unlike Mesopotamian houses, Harappan homes prioritized privacy, safety, and hygiene over outer decoration.
- No Street Windows: Ground floor walls facing streets had no windows. Outer doors were offset to prevent direct views into the inner courtyard.
- Central Courtyard: Multi-room houses were arranged around a central courtyard, which served as the hub for cooking and weaving.
