Amendability under Article 368

In the **Kesavananda Bharati Case (1973)**, the Supreme Court ruled that because the Preamble is a part of the Constitution, it can be amended under Article 368. However, any amendment must respect the **Basic Structure Doctrine**.

The Preamble has been amended only once: the **42nd Constitutional Amendment Act, 1976**, which added the words **Socialist, Secular, and Integrity**. The validity of this amendment has been upheld by the courts.
